I had never heard of them before today but Facebook tells me they exist. Kind of cool especially for a low-ish price.

What say you?

I'm curious, especially since you can get it with manual.

Could be a fun motorcycle alternative. Maybe even a budget morgan three wheeler starting point?

My thoughts exactly. I just want to know how it drives. If they make it even marginally fun, I'm in.

I will believe it when I see it.

That said, I would love to build a kit version of something like this some day:

http://exomotive.com/eco-exo/

Kinja'd!!!

I would rock that in winter, and with the third stability wheel, I could probably get my girl to ride it.

unfortunately, the fact the kit is based on a scooter that was never for sale in America makes it fairly unrealistic. plus, the added weight to a scooter motor makes me feel like anything short of a 600cc base scooter would be fairly lackluster performance-wise.

No cars have been built, but they have a location at least.

Things I miss when I don't visit the fp. Interestingly, they seem to have over 9,000 hand raisers.

Please keep us posted on this. I would be interested in any communication that has been sent out to prospective owners and such.

It would be a fun motorcycle alternative in the same way a wheelchair is a fun alternative to being bedridden.

Yeah but more 3 wheeled motorcycle than car. Not to mention a lot more expensive.

I would maybe buy one as a toy if they were enough fun, and especially if you could strip them down LoCost style , losing some of the body panels and weight.

I think it would be a perfect toy for me since I'm terrified of motorcycles, but still want something light and fun. The only issue? For $6,800 I can get any number of Miatas...

Ok so it's more expensive, but besides having no real doors it's more car-like than the Elio. It has more power, it sits two people next to each other and it's been around a while and you can actually go buy one.

There's no putting down a deposit and hoping the company is legit and gives you something sometime in the future.

A valid point. Miata is, again, the answer.

Yeah, I would have to see it in person but JayhawkJake just made a point for a used Miata that made more sense.

I feel like at 6800, there are a lot of choices I'd prefer. I mean, sure, 84 mpg is cool...but then you can just buy a cheap bike for around town.

Kinja'd!!! JasonStern911 > Hooker

the kit is very cleverly done. by using a scooter drivetrain, the engine/transmission is integrated into the swingarm, seriously reducing the complexity of trying to build a similar motorcycle based kit with a decent suspension. but that also removes the ability for a manual transmission...

most motorcycles don't get 84MPG in the real world, so I'm skeptical IEV can design a more fuel efficient motor than Honda, BMW, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc.

I would be tempted to buy one and sell the metro, although no space for kids, or many tools. I will be watching on this.

I checked their site and I looks like the are going with a front engine front wheel drive layout. Not the most sporting, but probably an economical commuter. I guess the questions are 1.) do people want small and economical commuters. 2.) if they do sell how long before they make an SUV.

One year from now, Elio will be an another three-wheeled trivia question.

I just don't think they can sell those for that kind of money, and be profitable. I even have my doubts that they'll get any out the door.

I could be wrong. We'll have to wait and see.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > MtrRider Just Wants Doritos
02/16/2014 at 20:55

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, it's more that I don't trust myself enough to ride one.

I've wrecked bicycles plenty with the scars to prove it, I don't wish to do more harm on something faster.

Right now I feel more comfortable on a motorcycle than a bicycle.

I recommend you take a MSF course and learn the basics of how to ride one, even if you never plan on getting one. If you like it, get a small 100-200cc dirt bike and learn how to handle it off road where you're safe and going slow. Dirtopia.com can show you where you can ride close to you if you're in the US. Even if you crash, you won't get hurt provided you're wearing proper gear. I wear one of these

Kinja'd!!!

Thor Impact Rig

It's expensive, but it's saved my ass (well, back and arms actually) more than once. I can take a hard hit to the chest and not even feel it.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > MtrRider Just Wants Doritos

Kinja'd!!!0

I actually do want to take a course sometime just to see what it's like, but I don't see myself owning a bike anytime soon.

Not that I have anything against them, I just have enough expensive hobbies already, and I still don't own a Miata.

Kinja'd!!! MtrRider Just Wants Doritos > Jayhawk Jake

Kinja'd!!!0

You can never have too many expensive hobbies. Just think- for the price of a Miata, you can have a bike that's faster than a Ferrari 458 Italia, gets better gas mileage than a Camry Hybrid, and will make your chest hair grow in 50% thicker.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > MtrRider Just Wants Doritos
02/16/2014 at 21:43

Kinja'd!!!0

I get good gas mileage in the Sonic, and I really, really don't want any more chest hair...

My car hobby isn't even that bad right now, although since I'm planning to start autocross this year it's going to get bad. It's the RC planes and home theater stuff that's been the wallet destroyer for me.

Can your Sonic run the 1/4 in 10 seconds?

Well no wonder you're broke. RC aircraft? You crazy SOB, I tried one of those once. It... well, it didn't last very long.

I've had a few that didn't last long. Eventually they start to stick around.

I bet my sonic could do the 1/4 in 10 seconds if JATO is allowed
